Course Overview

Red Cross Advanced First Aid Recertification builds on the knowledge and skills in the Canadian Red Cross Emergency Care for Professional Responders reference text. This recertification refreshes the competencies needed to provide appropriate patient assessments, interventions, and ongoing care in the workplace, and includes options for transporting an injured person from the workplace to a healthcare facility.

The recertification includes a Basic Life Support (BLS) content refresh to support professional responder readiness, including high-quality CPR and team-based response fundamentals.

The program meets CSA Standard Z1210-17 First Aid Training for the Workplace.

Primary and secondary surveys
Airway management and respiratory emergencies
Circulatory emergencies, shock, hemorrhage, and soft tissue trauma

Chest, abdominal, and pelvic injuries
Head and spinal injuries
Acute and chronic illnesses
Poisoning and environmental illnesses
Pregnancy labour, and delivery
Special populations and crisis intervention
Reaching, lifting, and extricating patients
Transportation and multiple-casualty incidents
Pharmacology, marine environment, and workplace considerations as required by legislation

Completion Requirements

To receive certification, participants must: Attend and participate in 100% of the course Successfully demonstrate the required skills Achieve a minimum score of 75% on the written, closed-book knowledge evaluation Successfully complete two evaluated scenarios, one medical and one trauma

Certification

Upon successful completion, participants receive a renewed Canadian Red Cross Advanced First Aid certification that is valid for 3 years.

This course is for people who hold a current, valid Canadian Red Cross Advanced First Aid certification and need to renew before expiry.

Important Notes

A current, valid Advanced First Aid certificate is required to register for recertification. Government-issued photo identification may be required at sign-in. Participants must be adequately prepared to participate in the language of instruction for required course elements, including safety activities, scenarios, and the written evaluation.
