Course Overview

Telehandler training provides foundational instruction for operators of telescopic handlers used to lift, carry, and place loads on industrial and construction sites. The course covers safe load handling, stability fundamentals, pre-start inspections, and the balance and reach principles that affect load capacity and tip-over risk.

The program combines classroom theory with a hands-on practical evaluation, with emphasis on load chart interpretation, boom angle and extension effects on capacity, and the use of spotter communication and exclusion zones during lifts.

What You Will Learn

Topics Covered

Identify telehandler hazards and operator responsibilities under applicable Alberta OH&S Code requirements and site safety rules
Read and apply load capacity plates and load charts for the specific telehandler being operated
Explain the effects of boom extension, boom angle, and load centre on rated capacity
Apply stability concepts, including centre of gravity and combined centre of gravity
Complete pre-start inspection and operational checks using a standardized checklist
Set up a safe work area, including ground conditions, slope, overhead hazards, and exclusion zones
Pick up, travel with, place, and stack loads using safe techniques and spotter communication
Recognize unsafe conditions, including slope, soft ground, wind, and suspended loads, and apply stop-work decisions
Apply safe shutdown, parking, and securing procedures at the end of shift

Completion Requirements

To receive certification, participants must: Attend and participate in all course components Successfully demonstrate safe operation during the practical evaluation Complete the knowledge check as directed by the instructor

Certification

Upon successful completion, participants receive a Certificate of Completion that is valid for 3 years.

Operate telehandlers for material handling, placement, or staging on industrial or construction sites
Are new operators or operators looking to refresh their telehandler safety knowledge
Need formal telehandler operator training to support employer competency programs
Important Notes

Important Notes

Full attendance is required for certification. Participants must be physically capable of operating equipment and participating in practical evaluation. Government-issued photo identification may be required at sign-in. Participants must be adequately prepared to participate in the language of instruction for required course elements, including safety activities and practical evaluation.
