First Aid & CPR Instructor – Canadian Red Cross
Cost: $750.00
This course provides candidates with the knowledge and skills necessary to teach Canadian Red Cross first aid and CPR courses. The candidates are expected to have finely tuned first aid and CPR technical skills. Therefore, this course focuses on how to teach and facilitate first aid and CPR skills.
Day #1 – 4:30 – 6:30 pm – Skills Evaluation
Day 2 & 3: – 8:00 am – 4:00 pm – Fundamentals of Instruction
Day 4 & 5 – 8:00 am – 4:00 pm – Discipline Specific Classroom
Prerequisites:
- Hold a current Standard First Aid & CPR-C certificate
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Your Standard First Aid certificate must be current within 1 year of the Skills Development Session. If your certificate is not current you must must take the Standard First Aid/CPR Level
Process:
- Step 1: Pre-requisites and Skill Evaluation Session (7 – 8 Hours)
- Step 2 & 3: Online and In-class Sessions (34 Hours or 4 days)
- Step 4: The Teaching Experience is scheduled once the online and in-class steps are successfully completed. You will meet twice with the Teaching Experience Supervisor to discuss lesson plans and other details.
- Step 5: Certification

Completion Requirements:
- Skills testing
- Online Fundamentals of Instruction approximately 8 hours
- 36 hours classroom including in-class micro teaching
- Complete practice teaching after successful completion of the above
First Aid & CPR Instructors support the Red Cross First Aid Program through the delivery of our First Aid and CPR courses. Candidates enter our comprehensive Instructor Development Program, designed to prepare them to support dynamic, learner-centered classroom environments.
You may qualify to Transfer into the Instructor Course if:
1) You hold a current First Aid Instructor certificate through a recognized agency: St. John’s Ambulance, Life-Saving Society, or Heart and Stroke Foundation. This may exempt you from completing Step 3 of the process: Discipline Specific-Classroom Component.
2) You hold a current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor/Trainer certificate or a Bachelor of Education Degree. This may exempt you from completing Step 2 of the process: Fundamentals of Instruction Classroom-Component.
3) You hold a current Red Cross First Aid/CPR instructor certificate but have not taught the minimum number of courses required for recertification. This may exempt you from completing Step 3 of the process: Discipline Specific-Classroom Component.
Teaching Experience Only Option ($350.00 + GST)
- This option is only available if you have completed the prior steps and just require the teaching experience.
- All completion documents need to be submitted to veronica@atsafetytraining.ca prior to your registration.
- You will meet twice with the Teaching Supervisor to discuss lesson plans and other details. Arrangements are made by contacting veronica@atsafetytraining.ca
- Please select a Standard First Aid course and email veronica@atsafetytraining.ca to make your request.
- AT Safety Training will not allow Teaching Experiences on Blended Courses.

First Aid & CPR Instructor Development Pathway
Below is the pathway to become a certified First Aid & CPR Instructor. You must successfully complete each step before advancing to the next step. Certification is valid for three years.
1. Evaluate Skills and Check Prerequisites
Confirm prerequisites are met: you must be 18 years or older, have a valid participant certificate for the program you wish to teach, and successfully complete a skills evaluation.
2. Fundamentals of Instruction
Complete the Fundamentals of Instruction online component (8 hrs*), and a classroom component (14 hrs 30 min) focused on the application of fundamentals.
3. Discipline-Specific Classroom Component
Attend the First Aid & CPR discipline-specific classroom component (14 hrs 30 min), which focuses on the specific skills of that program.
4. Teaching Experience
Complete the Teaching Experience online module (30-45 min*) and a classroom component with the support of a Teaching Experience Supervisor.
5. Certification
An electronic certification will be issued upon completion. Certified Instructors can teach Emergency First Aid, Standard First Aid, Marine Basic First Aid, Emergency Child Care First Aid, Standard Child Care First Aid and CPR courses.
