Course Overview

Overhead Crane and Basic Rigging Combination training provides foundational instruction for people who operate overhead cranes and support lifts through basic rigging activities. The program emphasizes lift planning basics, inspection and selection of rigging gear, safe signalling and communication, and hazard control during lifting and moving loads.

The course references CSA B167 for overhead cranes and applicable Alberta OH&S Code requirements, including Part 6: Cranes, Hoists and Lifting Devices, where applicable, and Part 21: Rigging.

What You Will Learn

Topics Covered

Identify overhead crane hazards, including pinch points, suspended load risks, load movement hazards, and side-pull damage
Apply applicable Alberta OH&S Code requirements for cranes, hoists, lifting devices, and rigging
Identify common crane components, controls, and terminology, including pendant and radio remote controls
Perform pre-use visual and operational inspection of the crane, including upper hoist limit switch and hook safety latch
Explain basic rigging principles, including working load limits, sling angles, load balance, and the effect of sling angle on individual sling load
Inspect and select rigging gear, including slings, shackles, hooks, and tag lines, and remove damaged gear from service
Apply correct hitch types for common loads, including vertical, choker, basket, and bridle hitches
Use internationally recognized hand signals for hoist, lower, bridge travel, trolley travel, stop, and emergency stop
Operate crane functions smoothly to lift, travel, and place loads while maintaining load control and keeping the hoisting line vertical over the load’s centre of gravity
Apply safe shutdown and parking procedures, including raising the hook block above head level where required by site procedure

Completion Requirements

To receive certification, participants must: Attend and participate in all course components Successfully demonstrate safe crane operation and basic rigging during the practical evaluation Complete the knowledge check as directed by the instructor

Certification

Upon successful completion, participants receive a Certificate of Completion that is valid for 3 years.

This course is for people who:

Operate overhead cranes as part of shop, industrial, or maintenance work
Attach loads and use basic rigging gear under supervision or as part of lift support
Need foundational crane and rigging training to support employer competency programs

Full attendance is required for certification. Participants must be physically capable of participating in the practical evaluation. Government-issued photo identification may be required at sign-in.
